Support Bay View

John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.

Remembering the old streetcars

When we were very young, we used to take the streetcar to go downtown. When we were riding, we would sometimes reverse a seat so that we could face each other as we traveled. I remember the # 10 streetcar that used go over a long bridge while on its way to County Stadium. This was one of the last regular streecars to run in Milwaukee.  The North Shore streetcars used to go from Milwaukee to Chicago.  On the way to Chicago was Great Lakes Naval Base and North Chicago. When I was in the U.S. Navy, I took the North Shore to go to Great Lakes. On liberty, I also took it to get home to Milwaukee. Now, all of the streetcars that used to go someplace are now gone. They want to bring back a streetcar that goes nowhere, but it's not the same. Somethings will never be the same as before.
