I'd like to plug an area program that I don't think a lot of people in this area know about, even though it's located right down the street at the Marion Center in Bay View.
Red Oak Young Writers. Here is a description taken directly from the web site:
Red Oak Young Writers is an organization dedicated to supporting writers in grades 5 – 12, through developmentally appropriate camps, workshops and events. Our coaches are writers themselves, each with a strong background in teaching and a marvelous rapport with young people. We recognize what a gift it is to nurture others on their writing journey and strive to offer participants the experiences, encouragement and just plain fun necessary to make their writing dreams come true.
I found out about this place because the group I'm involved in - PAGE - sponsored a free workshop for kids in South Eastern Wisconsin School Districts (who are memebers of PAGE). Even though the workshop was only two hours long, all the kids came out smiling. I saw one girl - she was one of the last kids to leave. She walked out, smiling and holding papers of written material in her hands. Beaming with excitement, she looked at her parents (both were there to pick her up) and asked them to take her back to Red Oak.
I would have loved a program like this when I was young.
