It is unbelievable as to the warm temperatures that we have had lately. This winter is the warmest one I can remember from the past. Enjoy yourselves as this weather may not last much longer. This is winter and weather surprises came come with little warning. Be aware of what is happening around you. Dress warm in case of sudden changes in weather.  Please support the Bay View community.

The Super Bowl is now over

I had hoped to see the Green Bay Packers play in the Super Bowl, but unfortunately this will not happen.  There is always the next year. We had an excellent season this year, but we don't always get what we want. I wish to thank them for an outstanding football season in 2011. Someday, they will return to the Super Bowl again. Please support the Green Bay Packers NFL Football team.

Hot chocolate and barbecued hamburger

In winter, after we finished our fun in the snow, we would love to go indoors for some hot chocolate and a few barbecued hamburgers. This food was very refreshing to us.  A little heat and a good hot meal made our day.  We might have gone sled riding or riding on a toboggan. These activities continued as we got older,  but hot chocolate and barbecued hamburger was still our snack food. As we got older and were with other couples, we still continued winter fun. When we had children, we would take them to enjoy some outdoor winter activities. These memories will be with us forever.

Happy birthday Mary and Kevin

I want to wish a happy birthday to both Kevin and Mary. It is very unusual to have your birthdays two days apart. It won't be long and you both will take a short vacation. Bella will be ok. She and Browinie will play and rest together. I hope that all goes well for you both. Enjoy yourselves. It is later than you think. Have a good time on your birthdays.

Our strange weather

It seems that whenever we have a bad winter, Europe has beautiful weather.  This year Europe is getting the cold bitter air, and we are are receiving some warm pleasant weather. Whenever I check the weather reports for the world, it seems that the opposite weather is received in Europe as it is here. It could be worse. Enjoy our warm winter and save on heating costs.  Please support the Bay View community.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. This is the day for lovers to share gifts with each other. Give flowers, candy, a valentine or a gift to someone who is very dear to you. This is a good day for romance. Have a very Happy Valentine's Day.

Milwaukee Braves Knothole Gang

When I was younger, I was given a chance to go with a church group and see the Milwaukee Braves play baseball.  This was a way to see the Braves play at a reduced cost and to sit in the bleachers. We left the church by school bus and drove to the game. Imagine being able to see Andy Pafko, Eddie Mathews, Sid Gordon, Wes Covington, Billy Bruton, Henry Aaron, Johnny Logan, Del Crandall, Gene Conley, Warren Spann and many other players in a baseball game. The Knothole Gang was designed to let younger children see the Braves games with other children. Stan the Man Musial was a great player to watch. Red Schoendiest was also fun to watch, then he came to play in Milwaukee as one of our players. It is hard to imagine living that time era again. It was a lot of fun and a chance to be with friends while watching a major league baseball game. Don't you wish you could have seen this with me?

Remembering the old streetcars

When we were very young, we used to take the streetcar to go downtown. When we were riding, we would sometimes reverse a seat so that we could face each other as we traveled. I remember the # 10 streetcar that used go over a long bridge while on its way to County Stadium. This was one of the last regular streecars to run in Milwaukee.  The North Shore streetcars used to go from Milwaukee to Chicago.  On the way to Chicago was Great Lakes Naval Base and North Chicago. When I was in the U.S. Navy, I took the North Shore to go to Great Lakes. On liberty, I also took it to get home to Milwaukee. Now, all of the streetcars that used to go someplace are now gone. They want to bring back a streetcar that goes nowhere, but it's not the same. Somethings will never be the same as before.

Delivering the mail

When I started to carry mail, we used to be able to get on a streetcar or bus with our leather pouch and be able to ride free to the starting point on our routes. On mail routes that were not close to bus transportation, we had vehicles to haul our mail in. Some of the mail trucks were like milk trucks where you had to stand while driving the vehicle. Some vehicles were Nash vehicles with no back seats. When we got the Jeeps, I was very happy. Some had a manual choke on them and you could start them in any weather. Later models had automatic chokes. We also had right hand drive 1/2 tons that would be used for mounted sections of mail delivery. Dodge and Chevy trucks were the main vehicles for parcel post delivery. During the Christmas season, they used to borrow U.S. Army vehicles without heaters to help with mail delivery. Our jeeps had either right hand or left hand driving positions. You had to learn to drive both types of vehicles to get a federal license. When we were taking our federal drivers license test, we had to paralel park by the old Chruch of Pompei near the old federal building. Driving the various types of postal vehicles was quite an experience. You quickly found out which ones were good and dependable and which ones were just plain junk. Imagine being in a postal parking lot with a boss yelling at you for not moving your vehicle. I then handed him the gearshift handle which had broken off and asked him how I could drive it with no gearshift lever. He made me drive it using the remaining portion of the lever, which was hard to do.

How do you get rid of a cold?

It has several weeks now, and my cold has yet to go away. Coughing is no fun and the chest hurts from too much coughing. I have used up a lot of handkerchiefs. Every time that I think I have to licked, it comes back with vigor. Cough medicine, Vick's, cold medicine, Tylenol all have helped for a while. but low and behold it's back again. Bed rest seems to help, but nobody wants to be in bed all day. Someday I will get lucky and this will all go away.  Please support the Bay View community.

Humboldt Park 4th of July Association needs help

We are going to have our regular March meeting of the Humboldt Park 4th of July Association on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 7 PM, in the park pavilion. We are in need of more members to help us keep our Independence Day celebration move forward. We could use the fresh input of new members and new ideas to make our organization stronger. We have done this celebration since 1910 and would like to continue it into the future. Please consider becoming a member and being part of a good organization. Help more families have the chance to celebrate Independence Day at Humboldt Park.  We have a morning parade, morning games, bicycle-tricycle-coaster wagon-doll buggy decorating contest, afternoon parade for the children, talent show, evening program, fireworks, music on the side stage, Dancing with Woofs program, Rainbow Randa, and an afternoon dance contest.  These activities need lots of members to help keep this work operational.  We do all of this for the children and their families to enjoy the greatest local park program in Milwaukee. Become a member and help us in the organization and planning of each 4th of July celebration at Humboldt Park. We welcome your input and suggestions.

We are now in Lent

During Lent, we try to give up some of our favorite things and do not eat meat on Fridays. Self sacrifice is a part of Lent.  We honor our Savior who went through his passion at this time. He fasted for  40 days in the desert. He began His mission to promote our salvation. He went from place to place to preach and heal people. After the chief priests and scribes protested about His teaching, they sought to have Him arrested as a common criminal to face justice in the form of the Roman governor Pontius Pilot and a hearing before the chief priest and scribes council. He also was taken before King Herod.  While in custody, He was mocked and tortured. He was eventually sent by Pontius Pilot to be crucifed on a cross until dead.  After three days, He arose from his grave and presented himself to his disciples. He ascended to Heaven and later gave his disciples the Holy Spirit at Penecost. They were then able to perform miracles and speak in many languages. He gave His disciples instruction to spread the Word to all nations. We share in His mission when we ourselves give up something special to us in memory of His Passion and honoring Him as we do it. Have a special Lenten season and go to church and learn of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

This year we have a leap year.

On February 29th, we have an extra day for our leap year.  To keep our calendars straight, we have to add an extra day every four years. The short month of February was chosen to have this extra day. Have fun and continue your normal routine as this day is just another day in our calendar year. This only happens once every fours years.  Please support the Bay View community.
