The Barking Lot-America's Finest Dog Blog (04/19/14)

The Barking Lot

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In
Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then its DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Mostly sunny. High of 55. "C"

EASTER SUNDAY:  Partly cloudy. High around that 70 degree mark. "A"

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

It seems that in the weeks before Christmas, pet owners everywhere are reminded and warned about safety hazards surrounding the holiday season.  It’s always good advice, but then those tidbits are tucked away with our ornaments, wreaths, and lights; we seem to remember them again just after Thanksgiving.

But what about Easter?  Yes, there are just as many dangers to your dog in the Spring season.  You need to consider the same warnings about chocolate & sugary treats that The Bunny brings, not just the ones St. Nick delivers.

You need to remember that Easter lilies are just as toxic as drinking the water in the tree stand.  (While these rules generally apply to cats, it’s a good idea to be aware of them even if you only have dogs.)

Every major holiday revolves around The Dinner, right?  And how tempting is it to give in to those soulful eyes of Fido as you’re stuffing your face with ham, potatoes, Polish sausage and the like?  That Easter spread is so yummy what’s the harm?  Perhaps more than you might realize.

Please enjoy this blessed holiday with your family.  If you want to get your pooch his or her own basket filled to the brim with SAFE treats, by all means do it.  Don’t forget the extra loves, belly rubs and ear scratches.  Maybe an extra, unexpected & unscheduled walk too?

There are all sorts of ways to over-indulge your four-legged friends for the holidays.  But please make sure they don’t do more harm than good.  Common sense and simple rules can prevent lots of trouble.

Thanks, Jennifer!

Back in the 1980's during my time at WUWM, I had the privilege of working with a good friend, Obie Yadgar, classical music host. But when asked what he did, Obie would tell people, "I'm a writer." This piece tugs at the heart strings.

THAT'S IT FOR DOGS IN THE NEWS.

HERE'S OUR DOG PHOTO OF THE WEEK:

Doggy egg hunt

More than 50 people and their pets took part in the Winnetka Park District’s Annual Doggy Egg Hunt on April 12 at Centennial Park. The Doggy Egg Hunt is sponsored by the park district and community partners including Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners, Carriage Hill Kennels, The Grand Food Center, Wags on Willow, Wilmette Pet Center, Winnetka Animal Hospital and the Winnetka Current. We close as we always do with our closing video.

An Arizona woman so distraught over the loss of her dog had to be hospitalized for, well, take a look as Rebecca Taylor reports.

OK. One more.

At the Nevada Humane Society, whenever a dog gets adopted, they get a little excited.

That's it for this week.

Thanks for stopping by.  Please tell a fellow dog lover about us. Better yet, e-mail them this blog!

See ya, BARK, next week!

Ahh, here's Hillbilly Easter Bunny posing for a picture with his two dogs -- actually the dogs belong on the farm but now studying to be a farmer dude #easter #bunny
