John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.
May Day is labor day to the world. We remember the workers who gave their all so we could advance and be fed. The labor of our workers includes farmers, doctors, nurses, teachers, educational staff workers, factory workers, postal workers, food market employees, truck drivers, bus drivers, airplane staff, hotel staff, city municipal employees, police, firemen, ambulance staff, newspaper workers, clerical workers, medical workers, clergy and many more occupations. Where would we be without these workers? What happens if we underpay these workers? Many people when getting their education, stay clear of these occupations that are grossly underpaid. Where is the future if you are raising a family. In the future we may have a shortage of teachers and family doctors. There is too much work involved and too little pay, to keep these occupations.
If our politicians keep attacking our unions, conditions similar to the 1880's will occur on the labor front. You may get sick on the job, and be fired as a result. You will be replaced shortly by another person looking for a job. There will be no security. No more 8-hour days. No more overtime. Less holidays. Imagine going to work and if the boss decides that he no longer likes you, you will be replaced and fired on the spot. Without our unions there is no security, no guaranteed pay, no workman's compensation, no vacations. You will only be given a job if you are capable of handling it. If you are injured on the job, you are useless to management. You will have no workers rights or benefits.
If this is what you want, then keep electing these anti-labor politicians. When the next election comes, you know what you must do. Get out of your easy chair or couch and get out there and vote. The future is yours to decide. Please support our local unions and what they stand for.
