John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.
It is hard to believe that the South Shore Frolics began in the 1930's from the South Shore Yacht Club. In 1948, it became known as the South Shore Water Frolics and was sponsored by the Bay View Inter-organizational Council. When it became too difficult to continue, the Frolics were stopped for one year and then they became the South Shore Frolics and now were sponsored by the Bay View Lion's Club. Many of the same members from the Bay View Inter-organizational Council are part of the Bay View Lion's Club. We thank them for taking over this fine event. The Frolics is still in danger of going out of business unless it can get more members in the Lion's Club and many more sponsors from the community.
We in the community seem to take the Frolics for granted, but forget that there is a lot of planning and fund raising done during the year. While this is a wonderful event, it must have the complete support of the community to succeed. Don't take anything for granted. Be willing to support the group either by donating needed funds or in becoming a volunteer in working at the event. In previous years, financial support has been lacking and placing this event in danger of running out of funding.
Let's support the Frolics in anyway that we can. Its future is in the support of the community. If you would like it to continue, please support it. I hope that they are successful this year.
The Frolics run on July 11, 12 and 13 of 2014. Y'all come and join us there.
