Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: "What a fox, I am in love"

Friday Night Forgotten Oldie

It won’t be long until it’s back to school. One of the great musicals and musical movies deals with a back to school storyline.

In the movie during the summer of 1958, Danny and vacationing Sandy meet at the beach and fall in love. When the summer comes to an end, Sandy, who is supposed to return to Australia, worries that they’ll never see each other again. The movie quickly forwards to the start of the seniors' term at Rydell High School. After her parents decide not to return to Australia, Sandy enrolls at Rydell.  Danny and Sandy are unaware of each other's presence at Rydell, and as a result tell their respective friends what happened over the summer during their brief romance without mentioning the other's name. Like the two sexes the two stories differ greatly.

Danny of course was played by John Travolta who gained fame a few years before Grease as Vinnie Barbarino in the ABC-TV sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter.”

Interesting Gabe Kaplan who played Kotter should refer to “American Bandstand.” Before John Travolta was doing “Greased Lightning” or “Summer Lovin’” or “You’re the One that I Want,” he was singing his very first hit, a ballad on Dick Clark’s program. At the time I preferred a more rockin’ Vinnie, I mean John Travolta. So even though it was a “nice” song, it didn’t exactly make me run to the record store. The perfect forgotten oldie.
