Support Bay View

John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.

Goundhog Day

Today we celebrate Gorundhog Day. We will watch to see if the groundhog sees his shadow today. This is supposed to show how many more weeks of winter are left for us. This is an old folk lore that has been around for many years. It is always fun to guess how many weeks of winter are left. We are supposed be in a climate warming period and therefore expect spring early. Your guess is as good as mine as to what the facts are on our future weather. Enjoy each day as a gift of the Lord and live accordingly.

Weather merry-go-round

As you can see it is as if we are on a roller coaster with our outdoor temperatures. We can not plan ahead due to our unusual weather pattern.  Watch out for hidden ice outside and do not fall down if possible. During unstable weather, hidden black ice can be concealed as to make it look safe until you fall down on it. When it is wet outside, walk with caution. Any slippery ground can cause a fall. Be safe and enjoy the remainder of our winter.

Protect the U.S. Postal Service

We are facing a financial crisis with the U.S. Postal Service. Congress would like to privatize it and reduce delivery days. The postal service is a service and is not meant to make a profit. It is the government reaching out to you and I. We have the most secure postal service in the world. We must keep our postal service as it is now. Would you like your mail delivered by your pizza delivery person at any time day or night? Would you like to see daily workers such as homeless people handle your mail? The postal service is known for its honesty. We have hard working honest people delivering our mail now. Why change that? Write to your congress person to help protect the U.S. Postal Service. Time is running out now, and we need your help.

Support the education of our children

Now, teachers are getting low pay and benefits. Under the Republican plan, they would like to reduce this pay and benefits. Who could afford to become a teacher in the future?  Who would want to become a teacher under present conditions? What kind of future will new teachers have?  Are we sacrificing our children due to money problems. Good quality teachers need good pay to stay as teachers. In the past, teachers gave up pay raises to increase their benefits. Now, much of this is being taken away from them. How much is it worth to you to see your children get a quality education? Would you be willing to fight politicians to protect our educators?  Our children are not robots. They need to be able to learn to be free thinkers and open to educational values. Our children are our heritage. You also need to help our educators by becoming involved in your child's education process. PTA is a wonderful organization to help parents help their children. Take the time to find out all that it takes to become a teacher, and at what cost. To keep a good teacher, we need incentives for their future. You are the key to your child's future. Support our educational system.

We have a spring election coming up soon

Take the time to vote in this election. Even though it is a small election, political candidates must be chosen. Must only a few voters elect these candidates? Read the information on the candidates and choose the person you wish to get into political office. It does not take much time to vote. It is up to you on this matter.

Humboldt Park 4th of July Association needs your help

We are going to have our regular March meeting of the Humboldt Park 4th of july Association on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at 7 pm, in the Humboldt Park Pavilion. We are in need of a few new members to help us keep our Independence Day celebration moving forward. We could use the fresh input of new members and new ideas to make our oganization stronger. We have done this celebration since 1910 and would like to continue it into the future. Please consider becoming a member and being part of a great organization. Help more families have the chance to celebrate Independence Day at Humboldt Park. We have a morning parade, morning games, bicycle-tricycle-coaster wagon-doll buggy decorating contest, afternoon parade for the children, talent show evening program, fireworks, music on the side stage, Rainbow Randa and an afternoon dance contest. These activities require the energy of lots of volunteers to keep all of this operational. We do all of this for the children and their families to enjoy the greatest Independence Day local park program in Milwaukee. Become a member and help us in the organization and planning of each 4th of july celebration at Humboldt park. We welcome your input and suggestions. Please call Larry Reeve at 414-643-5427 if you have any questions.

Happy birthday, Arlene

Happy birthday Arlene. As my sister, I have known you all of my life. I hope that you and Ron are celebrating your birthday together. For 53 years you two have been through a wonderful life. Both of you were officers of the YWCA Terpsichorean Club and had lots of fun organizing and planning many events together. You were a vari-typist for many years. You and your old and new friends had many get togethers. Ron is now a Shriner and very involved in the Tripoli Shrine. I hope that you have a very happy birthday today.

Going on a cruise ship

Going on a cruise ship now is like getting involved in politics. When the cruise ship breaks down, you can smell all of the politics going on. Overfowing toilets, lack of running water, lack of food, unbearable stench inside of boat, and no leadership to correct any of these problems. I can see how the unions feel under our Republican politicians. The same problems exist as on the trapped cruise ship. The unbearable stench of lack of proper leadership and the forcing of unfair laws on the people. We seem to have the same options as the people trapped on the cruise ship. Grin and bear it. If going on a cruise ship is going to be like this, I don't ever want to be a part of it. You can also have your limited politics.

We will be getting a new Pope soon

As you know, Pope Benedict is resigning as Pope at the end of this month. The pressures of doing all the work required by the Pope, and advancing age have caused this action. When he was home in Bavaria, he had to handle the case of a priest who molested children. He sent the priest to rehab, and later assigned him to a new parish, where he continued to molest children again. The orders coming from the Vatican, indicate that silence is required in these cases. When he was assigned to the Vatican, under Pope John Paul II, he was involved in investigating priest molestation cases. The rules of the Vatican require silence in these matters. As he became Pope Benedict, all of these cases of the past came to his mind. The pressure from the priest molestation cases did not help him. It seems that these cases were coming from many locations in the world. If you were Pope, and your age  and physical condition was causing you much concern, would you want to be in this pressure cooker of a job? We now have to accept that he acted honorably in deciding to retire as Pope before his age related physical problems weakened his mental alertness. I feel that he was trying to relieve the pressure and end his life in a monastery where he could reflect on his life in peace. He can still serve the Lord in this new capacity. Let us honor this man for his decision to leave his job as Pope and let a younger person take his job; a man with charisma who can handle this difficult job.

We are still riding a roller coaster with our weather

It seams that we are caught between two jet streams. When the northern jet stream dominates, we get colder weather and some snow. When the southern jet stream dominates, we get warmer weather and some rain. When the two jet streams merge, Lord have mercy. This is when we get the worst weather with unpredictable results. We are unable to control the weather. Therefore we must adjust to its varying patterns. If we are lucky, maybe the northern jet stream will move back up north and we can have some warm pleasant weather. Until this happens, we must just ride the merry-go-round of weather. Hopefully spring will soon be here.

Will March come in as a lamb or as a lion?

In March, our weather can be very unstable and unpredictable. On certain days we can fly kites due to the strong winds that frequently are there. If it is warm enough, we can practice soft ball or go golfing. Thunder storms can come very quickly in spring. If you have a small little green house, you will be able to start planting some of your seeds. Sometimes, just placing a storm window over a box filled with soil will give you enough heat to start your plants growing. As it warms up, you can rake your grass and remove any leaves or small amounts of foreign materials that have come over the winter. Don't put away your winter things too early. If you do, you will be in for a big surprise when the weather suddenly changes. Proceed with caution, and enjoy the month of March.
