Support Bay View

John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.

May Day--Labor Day to the world

On May 1, we honor the workers of the world with an universal labor day celebration. When the Communists were in power, this was a day to show off all that they had to the world. We saw many of their weapons and soldiers marching in a parade. The leaders of their government would make a show of their appearance for all to see. What they did not show was any freedom ideas for the workers or the people. The government controlled the press and all other media. Only people that they could trust were allowed to visit the free world. Due to the nature of their oppression, many people lacked  incentives of a free market to produce much in production in their jobs. When freedom was restored to these countries, production increased by a large scale. People were no longer afraid to express their thoughts and ideas. New industries were created by the people. They also were allowed to go to church without worrying about the government spying on them. Now they are catching up to the rest of the world in both industry and ideas. This just shows you what a difference freedom makes in peoples lives.

Here in the United States, people seem to take freedom for granted. Our forefathers, when they wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, insured for us the freedom we enjoy today. Many of our people have had to fight for our freedom in the service of our country. We should honor these people for the job that they are doing and have done in the past. Freedom is not cheap. Many lives have been lost to protect our freedom. One freedom that we have is the right to vote in any election without interference from our government. If an elected official does not do his job correct, then vote for a new person to take that job next election. This way we can keep control of our  freedom and rights. By us voting, we can keep any person that we like who is doing a great job in office or replacing someone who is not doing a great job. By this means you can control our future. Take the time to read up on any political candidates, and determine if they are who you want to serve in a political office. Then, when the election comes, use your vote to express yourself.
