So here are some interesting facts about the bailout, and you can decide for yourself. I'm personally in favor of getting SOMETHING done, but I would prefer it favor homeowners and I would prefer that the money be used UNDER SUPERVISION, not handed over to a man who answers to no one. I think Paulson's plan amounted to Hostage Capitalism at its best, demanding $700 billion (that number was just taken out of the air, by the way) or the world would be destroyed. However, I could see how someone wouldn't favor anything whatsoever, even given the consequences it has for people who weren't involved.
Here are some things:
Click here to watch Pelosi's speech. According to John Boehner, this speech is the reason so many Republicans voted against the bailout. I sincerely HOPE that isn't the reason.
You can the read the entire bill in its entirety here.
Guess who voted against the bill? Representatives--from both sides of the aisle--who are involved in VERY close races this year. All of them. Are they voting in the best interests of the nation, or are they simply doing what will get them re-elected? Up to you.
Have we become a banana republic with nukes? The division in Congress is so wide now, according to Paul Krugman, that there's no possible way to reach a compromise that will work. ESPECIALLY given that no on either side of the aisle trusts our current president.
Best of luck to you all. At least in Milwaukee, we have a Brewers playoff race to help us through this. Go Brewers!
