Support Bay View

John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.

A monument to a person

I have often wondered, what would a good monument to S.W. of Milwaukee County. We know how he has neglected many of our county parks. Many restrooms have been declared unfit for use by the Milwaukee Health department. Many park staff workers have been laid off to save tax payer money, but ruin our parks. Some parks do not have enough staffing to check on the park restrooms, and in turn many restrooms are without hand soap and toilet tissue. He has also reduced handicapped bus service to Milwaukee County and reduced bus service in general.

I finally figured out a perfect monument to honor the man. Build an outhouse in a park, but do not supply it with toilet tissue. This will reflect on the person who has denied our parks so much. The people can do like the folk in Iraq do, use their left hand to wipe. Then they should shake their left hand with the man responsible for all of the neglect in our park system. This will remind him that we have needs also. We also could use some of his political literature to replace the toliet tissue in his monument. Can you suggest a better monument for him?

We have had some great park workers in the past. These people have done a great job of caring for the needs of the parks. Their dedication is and was over and above the call to duty. Now with 2/3rds of their workers laid off, they are limited in what they can do. Don't blame them for letting the parks turn into abandoned graveyards, because they work very hard at their work. Our parks are our heritage and should be protected so that more generations of people can enjoy them. A sales tax has been proposed to help save our parks and regional mass transit system. This is the time for this to happen, before it is too late to salvage what is left of these things. Please support our bus service and county park system. Contact your local politicians to ask for their help in this matter.
