Christie's Pub & Grill
3261 S. 13th St., Milwaukee (414) 672-3500
A reader e-mailed me a few months back to suggest I visit Christie's Pub & Grill on S. 13th St. She called it a smoke-free gem. Sounded good. Then she mentioned that the restaurant had started serving fried lobster tail specials. Huh? Lobster tail? This I had to see. On my first visit not long after the e-mail, I sat up a little straighter as I read the menu. See full review
Dobie's Steak House
4136 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., St. Francis (414) 744-9064
Stepping into Dobie's Steak House in St. Francis is like stepping into a time capsule from the mid-20th century. The décor, the menu - it all says vintage supper club. In these uncertain times, it's comforting to slip into a cozy cloak of nostalgia. See full review
Honeypie Café
2643 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Milwaukee (414) 489-7437
Honeypie - like sister restaurant Comet Café on N. Farwell Ave., also owned by chef Adam Lucks; his sister, Valeri Lucks; Scott Johnson; and Leslie Montemurro - dishes up entrées, about a half-dozen including a daily special, in addition to sandwiches. See full review | Restaurant's web site
Old Town Serbian Gourmet House
522 W. Lincoln Ave., Milwaukee (414) 672-0206
Dining at Old Town Serbian Gourmet House on the south side is a little like dining at a beloved grandma's - delicious, time-tested Old World recipes, from-scratch cooking and portions that guarantee no one leaves hungry. But in this case, Grandma has had some nips, tucks and other successful updates. See full review
Pastiche Bistro & Wine Bar
3001 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Bay View (414) 482-1446
I walked into Pastiche Bistro & Wine Bar in Bay View for the first time on a weeknight. It was crowded. It was buzzing. It was an hour's wait for the hungry unfortunates who hadn't made reservations. And so it was the next time I stopped in for dinner, and the next. One of the hottest tables of spring is at Pastiche, and with good reason. See full review | Restaurant's web site
St. Francis Brewery and Restaurant
3825 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. (at E. Howard Ave.), St. Francis (414) 744-4448
What diners will find on the menu, though, is often the traditional realm of pub grub; perhaps I was expecting flavors as interesting as the building's exterior. While everything from greens to meat to fish was fresh and the food generally was well-prepared, I wanted more dishes that made me want to return to enjoy them again. More often I found dishes that were just average. See full review | Restaurant's web site
Sheridan House and Café
5133 S. Lake Drive, Cudahy, at E. Pulaski Ave. (414) 747-9800
Lunchtime at Sheridan's Café: A couple of young, stylish moms with babies in tow occupy one of the Carrara marble-topped tables. At a corner banquette, several smartly dressed women of a certain age discuss their book club selection. At tables pushed together near the fireplace, an extended family is gathered, some members apparently visiting from out of town. See full review | Restaurant's web site
