St. Francis

The Mariners made just two of 25 field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and lost to Milwaukee School of Languages, 58-46, in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal Feb. 24 at School of Languages.

St. Francis built a 27-17 halftime lead in part because 11 of 16 free throws. The Mariners (8-13) made three of five in the second half.

School of Languages cut the gap to seven points after three quarters, then went wild with a 28-point fourth.

"In the second half, we stopped being as aggressive getting to the basket," St. Francis coach Mike Szydlowski said. "We just struggled.

"Once they got some momentum, and they cut it to seven at the end of the quarter ... We just couldn't stem the tide."

Mel Franken and Becky Gilbreath each scored 19 points for the Mariners.

Michelle Murff led School of Languages with 19 points, one more than Samera Williams.

South Milwaukee

The Rockets went down fighting in a 36-34 loss at Milwaukee Riverside on Feb. 24 in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal.

South Milwaukee (4-17) trailed at halftime, 18-17, and 28-21 after three quarters before making a comeback.

Mallory Wesley led South Milwaukee with 15 points.
