Milwaukee—The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC) and the Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies at the Sacred Heart School of Theology announce registration for the Holocaust Study Institute (HSI). The 14 week course will offer a comprehensive exploration of the historical and theological underpinnings of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. It will be taught at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Franklin, Wisconsin by a faculty consisting of local scholars from Alverno College, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Sacred Heart School of Theology. A public lecture is scheduled on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart School of Theology, and will feature Fr. Kevin Spicer, CSC, Ph.D., Professor of History at Stonehill College in Boston, Massachusetts who will present Catholics, Nazis, Jews: The Complexity of History. The first class meets from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on January 15, 2013 at the Sacred Heart School of Theology, 7335 S. Highway 100; Franklin, Wisconsin, and will continue on consecutive Tuesday evenings. The registration fee for the semester of study is $145.00. Partial scholarships are available for educators, students and clergy. Graduate credit is also available.

A 14-day Trip to Israel that includes Study at the World Holocaust Center at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem will follow the course during the summer of 2013 ( tentative dates are July 29-August 11). This unique tour of Israel will allow participants to study for 4 days at Yad Vashem, at the Shalom Hartman Institute, the Ghetto Fighters Museum; experience sites where religious faiths began and explore modern Israel. The approximate $4,500.00 cost of the trip includes all travel, lodging, entry fees to sites, and many meals. A deposit of $500.00 will hold a spot for this once in a lifetime trip. Persons interested in the trip are not required to take the Holocaust Study Institute course. A limited number of partial scholarships for educators, clergy and students are available for the trip.

The course and trip are coordinated and led by Richard Lux, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Scripture Studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology. Other faculty will include Dr. Amy H. Shapiro, Dr. Peter Staudenmaier, Dr. Tim Crain, Dr. Sherry Blumberg, Dr. Rachel Baum, Laurie Herman and Bonnie Shafrin.
