Holistic picnicking tips from local group

Aug. 4, 2009

Practical tips from local a local parenting group can help make Labor Day picnics healthier and greener. These pointers come from local members of the Holistic Moms Network, who strive for holistic health and green living.

A favorite of ours is veggie sticks (usually carrots) dipped in natural peanut butter (or other nut butter). It's got the fiber and the protein to keep the kids going! --Katie from Bay View

We bring lots of vegetables with spreads and dips, and stock up at Outpost Natural Foods Store. --Cristina from Cedarburg

I suggest using local, seasonal foods to prepare your meal at home (instead of store bought with extra packaging). --Annie from Bay View

Keep in mind the dirty dozen—the 12 fruits and vegetables with the most pesticides. A good list is at www.foodnews.org. --Rudy from Bay View

Use cloth napkins when you picnic. They can double as placemats on a dirty picnic table or on the ground or blanket. Afterwards, wet them to clean little messy little hands and faces. You can even clip one around a small child next with a clothespin for a handy bib. Then, instead of having trash afterwards, you can wash and reuse them over and over.

--Carolyn from St. Francis

We try to make our picnics "no waste." Bring real flatware, cloth napkins, real plates (bamboo, plastic, ceramic, etc.), water bottles from home (stainless steel or the good ol' mason jar). Pack it into a reusable cooler or picnic pack with reusable ice packs (instead of a disposable Styrofoam cooler with ice). --Annie from Bay View

For reusable containers, I love the nonbreakable, easily washable equivalent of Ziploc bags called Snack Taxis. They are available at Future Green in Milwaukee or www.snacktaxi.com/store/ --Jill from Bay View

If possible, choose to picnic on hot nights when you don't want to heat up the kitchen/house with cooking at home. We've even brought our Solar Oven to some picnics...as long as you get out at the right time of day. You could even bring a solar or crank powered radio and listen to an independent radio station for some "eco-tunes."
