Sherman Park Interfaith Historic Church Tour 2010

Two-day Sherman Park Historic Church Tour 2010. Friday, June 4 at St. John de Nepomuc, 3456 N. 38th St., starts with a Tour of this historic church at 5:30pm and 6:30--9pm Concert. On Saturday, June 5, 10-4pm, visit seven of the area's oldest churches. There is a reception and talk prior to the Church Tour June 5, 8:45-9:45am at Park Lawn Assembly of God. Paul Barribeau, architect with Groth Design Group, will speak about Sacred Spaces and Churches as Community Builders. Park your car at any of the participating church sites and ride the trolley. Turn in your entry ticket for a drawing for prizes.

 

Ticket prices: $15 for the Concert (limited availability), $25 for the Tour or $35 for Concert and Tour (limited availability).

Sherman Park is known for its historic buildings, housing stock and churches. Come visit this historic area! The Concert on Friday evening will be a must because of the incredible acoustics of St. John de Nepomuc.

 

Our cornucopia of religious traditions in this unique historic neighborhood is blessed to be musically grounded in great hymns from American, Roman, English, German, and African American traditions. We are featuring hymns from all these rich traditions. There are two amazing choirs: in the first hour, a mass choir will sing a section called American Hymnody. The Heritage Chorale will perform hymns and spirituals written by African-American composers in the second hour.

 

The American Hymnody Choir is comprised of members from the churches “on the tour”. The choir has trained to sing nearly an hour’s worth of these moving and inspirational hymns. In these musical moments you will experience the historic importance, the theological relevance, and the musical delight of some of our churches’ greatest hymns. The Director is Michael Kamenski, who is the Music Director at St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, as well as associate professor of Music at Alverno College, and the Conductor of the Menomonee Falls Symphony Orchestra.

 

The Heritage Chorale started as an ensemble in 1983. Ms. Ella Washington gained national acclaim as a music educator and has been featured both nationally and internationally. She is the recipient of the 2005 Civic Music Association Distinguished Citizen Award, and currently serves on the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors.
