The big community room of the new Greenfield Public Library was packed to capacity the afternoon of March 14th for the spring concert presented by members of the MacDowell Club of Milwaukee.
With a nod to the Emerald Isle, the program, "Bits of Blarney" -- curated by soprano Christine O'Meally of Wauwatosa -- featured works by 20th Century composers, all referencing Celtic heritage.
Opening the concert, Hales Corners' Gail Hodkiewicz (pictured) and Linda Hartig of Waukesha performed a lovely duet for clarinet and flute. Another member, pianist Carla Coonan of Bay View, accompanied Shorewood tenor William Lavonis on songs of Richard Faith composedd to texts by William Butler Yeats.
Other guest artists were soprano Wendelin Lockett of Grafton, tenor Ryan Stajmiger of Wauwatosa, and baritone Ryan Cappleman of Franklin who also accompanied Ms. O'Meally's set of songs by Ben Moore to words of James Joyce. All shades of green were evident throughout this delightfully entertaining hour.
The Club closes its 100th season at 7:30 Sunday evening, May 23rd, in the Nancy Kendall Theater at Cardinal Stritch University in Fox Point. For details, membership requirements, auditions, or additional information, you are invited to visit macdowellclubmilwaukee.org.
